December 8, 1886


The American Federation of Labor (AFL) is founded in Columbus, Ohio, by delegates of 25 unions representing 316,469 members.  The Preamble to the AFL Constitution begins:  “A struggle is going on in all the nations of the civilized world, between the oppressors and the oppressed of all countries, a struggle between the capitalist and the laborer….”
