A fire begins in Baltimore that destroys a major part of the city (1,500+ buildings) and takes over 1,200 fire fighters nearly a day and a half to bring under control.  Fire fighters from cities along the East Coast joined their Baltimore co-workers, but their efforts were hampered because their hose couplings didn’t fit the city’s hydrants.  The fire served as the impetus to work to standardize fire fighting equipment in the United States.
