5517770597_24991bc356_zA fire begins in Baltimore that destroys a major part of the city (1,500+ buildings) and takes more than 1,200 firefighters nearly a day and a half to bring under control. Firefighters from cities along the East Coast joined their Baltimore co-workers, but their efforts were hampered because their hose couplings didn’t fit the city’s hydrants. The fire served as the impetus to work to standardize firefighting equipment in the United States.
