Attorney General Mitchell Palmer launches a series of raids, arresting thousands of foreign-born radicals and “labor agitators.” He believed communism was “eating its way into the homes of the American workman” and socialists were causing most of the country’s social problems.

Thousands of detainees – foreign-born radicals and “labor agitators” – arrested during the Palmer Raids win their right to meet with legal representation at deportation hearings.  U.S. Attorney General Alexander Mitchell Palmer conducted the raids, stating that communism was “eating its way into the homes of the American workman” and that socialists were causing most of the country’s social problems.
